신앙생활에는 분명한 ‘결단의 순간’이 있습니다. 믿음이란 마음속에서만 품는 것이 아니라, 행동으로 드러나야 하는 것이기 때문입니다. 주님을 사랑한다는 고백은 결국 그분께 내 삶을 내어드리는 헌신으로 이어질 때, 진짜 믿음이 됩니다. 우리는 예배를 드리고, 말씀을 듣고, 찬양을 부르지만 때때로 우리의 마음은 멈춰 서 있을 때가 있습니다. 주님을 향한 첫사랑이 식어버리고, 기도해도 감동이 없으며, 예배 중에도 마음이 멀게 느껴질 때가 있지요. 그럴 때 주님은 조용히, 그러나 아주 분명하게 우리를 부르십니다.
“얘야, 다시 내게 오라. 내가 너를 기다리고 있다.”
그 부르심 앞에 응답하는 자리가 헌신대입니다. 헌신대는 단순히 교회 앞쪽의 공간이 아닙니다. 그곳은 하나님께서 사람을 새롭게 빚으시는 자리이며, 식은 마음을 다시 불타게 하시는 은혜의 자리입니다. 거기에는 눈물이 있고, 고백이 있고, 다시 일어서겠다는 결단이 있습니다. 솔직히 말씀 드리면, 헌신대에 나오는 일은 쉽지 않습니다. 사람들의 시선이 신경 쓰이고, 마음 한편에서는 “이번엔 그냥 앉아 있자”는 속삭임이 들릴 수도 있습니다. 그러나 주님은 완벽한 사람을 부르시지 않습니다. 그분은 “다시 주님 앞에 서고 싶습니다”라고 고백하는, 그 연약하지만 진실한 마음을 기다리십니다. 헌신대는 ‘잘한 사람’이 아니라, ‘다시 시작하려는 사람’이 서는 자리입니다.
신앙은 결단입니다. 결단 없는 신앙은 방향을 잃고, 헌신이 없는 신앙은 힘을 잃어버립니다. 우리가 주저앉은 자리에서 아무리 오래 머물러 있어도, 믿음의 불은 다시 타오르지 않습니다. 그러나 한 번의 결단이, 우리의 영혼을 새롭게 만들고, 우리 교회를 살리며, 우리의 가정을 회복시킵니다.
주님은 한 걸음을 기다리십니다. 오늘, 그 자리에 서십시오. 눈물로 나와도, 마음이 무겁고 연약해도 괜찮습니다. 그 자리는 정죄의 자리가 아니라 회복의 자리, 포기의 자리가 아니라 새로운 시작의 자리입니다. 하나님은 헌신대에서 무너진 인생을 다시 세우시고, 식은 가슴에 다시 불을 붙이십니다. 성도 여러분, 예배때마다 주님이 부르십니다. 그분은 지금도 당신의 이름을 부르고 계십니다. “사랑하는 내 자녀야, 네가 다시 내 앞에 서겠느냐?” 그 부르심에 응답하십시오. 오늘이 바로, 결단의 날입니다. 오늘이 바로, 헌신의 날입니다. 당신이 그 자리로 나아갈 때, 주님께서 미리 그곳에서 기다리고 계실 것입니다. 그리고 당신의 손을 잡고 이렇게 말씀하실 것입니다. “그래, 내가 너를 기다리고 있었다. 이제 다시 시작하자.” - 고요찬목사
No. 44. A Faith Without Commitment Is a Stagnant Faith
There are moments in the life of faith that call for a clear decision.
Faith is not something we simply hold in our hearts—it must be expressed through action. Our confession of love for the Lord becomes true faith only when it leads to a life of surrender and devotion to Him.
We worship, we listen to the Word, and we sing songs of praise, yet at times, our hearts stand still. Our first love for the Lord grows cold; prayer feels empty; even during worship, our hearts feel distant from God.
In such moments, the Lord gently calls out to us:
“My child, come back to Me. I have been waiting for you.”
The place where we respond to that call is the altar of dedication.
The altar of dedication is not just a space at the front of the church—it is the place where God reshapes His people, rekindles cold hearts, and pours out His grace anew. At the altar, there are tears, confessions, and renewed commitments.
To be honest, coming to the altar is not easy. We worry about how others might see us, and a quiet voice inside may whisper, “Maybe this time, just stay where you are.”
But the Lord does not call the perfect. He calls those who simply say,
“Lord, I want to stand before You once again.”
He waits for a heart that is weak yet sincere.
The altar is not for those who have done well—it is for those who want to begin again.
Faith is a matter of decision.
A faith without decision loses its direction; a faith without devotion loses its power. No matter how long we remain seated in the same place, our spiritual fire will not rekindle on its own.
But one act of surrender—one step of commitment—can renew our souls, revive our church, and restore our homes.
The Lord is waiting for that one step.
Today, take your place before Him. Even if you come with tears, even if your heart feels heavy and weak—it’s all right.
The altar is not a place of condemnation, but of restoration; not a place of giving up, but of new beginnings.
At the altar, God rebuilds broken lives and rekindles hearts grown cold.
Dear brothers and sisters, the Lord calls you in every worship service. Even now, He calls your name:
“My beloved child, will you stand before Me again?”
Answer His call.
Today is the day of decision.
Today is the day of commitment.
As you step forward, you will find that the Lord has already been waiting for you.
And He will take your hand and say,
