환란과 핍박 중에 맛볼 수 있는 맛

 

 

사도 요한은 오늘 본문 9절에서 자신을 소개하면서 먼저 “형제”라고 말합니다. 나이나 신분, 외모나 직분은 다 다르지만 예수님의 피로 한 몸을 이룬 형제라는 것이죠. 그리고 그는 예수 안에서 환난과 그 나라와 인내에 함께 참여한 자라고 고백합니다. 예수님을 증거하다 보니 환난도 받았고, 그러나 그 환난을 인내함으로 하나님의 나라에 함께 들어가는 형제라는 말입니다.

 

우리 시드니성서침례교회 성도님들도 마찬가지입니다. 우리는 다 서로 다르지만 예수님을 주로 고백하며 한 몸이 된 형제들입니다. 절대로 떨어질 수 없는 지체들입니다. 그래서 예수님 때문에 환난을 당할 때도 있지만, 결국 우리는 같은 하늘나라에서 안식하게 될 사람들입니다. 함께 고난을 겪으면서 지체 의식을 더 깊이 경험하게 되고, 서로에게 용기를 주며 함께 이겨낼 수 있습니다. 그래서 지금 내 옆에 있는 성도님은 그 어떤 누구보다 소중한 분입니다. 옆 사람에게 “몰라 봬서 죄송합니다” 하고 인사해야 할 정도로요.

 

사도 요한은 예수님을 전하다가 밧모섬에 유배되었습니다. 이유 없이가 아니라, 하나님의 말씀과 예수님을 증언했기 때문입니다. 예수님을 전하는 제자라면 환난과 고난은 피할 수 없는 길입니다. 말이 있는 사람은 자연스럽게 말하듯, 은혜를 경험한 사람은 자연스럽게 예수님을 전하게 되고, 그러면 세상과 다른 길을 가는 만큼 고난을 겪게 되어 있습니다.

 

우리 성도님들도 예수님 때문에 고난이나 핍박을 겪고 계신가요? 혹은 이미 그 고난을 지나 지금도 열심히 주님을 섬기고 계신가요? 그렇다면 제대로 믿고 있는 것입니다. 그리고 그 고난을 이기도록 주님은 계시록이라는 사랑의 위로의 편지를 주셨습니다. “두려워 말라, 끝까지 견뎌라, 내가 너희를 붙들고 있다” 하시는 주님의 음성입니다.

예수님은 소아시아의 일곱 교회—에베소, 서머나, 버가모, 두아디라, 사데, 빌라델비아, 라오디게아—그들 모두에게 이 편지를 보내라고 하십니다. 요한과 똑같이 핍박을 겪고 있는 그 교회들에게 예수님은 위로와 격려의 메시지를 보내신 겁니다. 고난을 끝까지 인내함으로 하나님의 나라에 들어오기를 바라시기 때문이죠.

 

우리 시드니성서침례교회와 성도님들도 마찬가지입니다. 고난과 환난이 있고, 때론 이해할 수 없는 일이 있지만, 끝까지 믿음으로 견디는 자들을 하나님은 버려두지 않으십니다. 반드시 천국으로 인도하시기 위해 편지를 보내시고, 신비한 방법으로 위로하시고 격려하십니다. 사실 우리 교회가 여기까지 온 것을 보십시오. 사람도 적었고, 재정도 부족했고, 어려움도 많았지만 여기까지 왔습니다. 우리가 잘나서 된 것도 아니고, 능력이 있어서 된 것도 아닙니다. 그저 우리를 위해 죽으시고 부활하신 예수님이 보이지 않는 손으로 이끄셨기 때문입니다. VIP를 섬기기 위해, 한 영혼이라도 구원하겠다는 마음으로 힘든 일도 감당한 우리 교회를 예수님이 기막힌 방법으로 위로하시고 격려하셨던 것입니다.

 

그렇다면 우리를 그렇게 위로하고 격려하시는 예수님은 어떤 분일까요? 본문 12-16절은 예수님의 보좌에 계신 모습을 아주 자세히 묘사합니다. 일곱 금 촛대 사이에 계신 예수님, 대제사장의 옷을 입고 만왕의 왕의 금 띠를 두르신 모습, 흰 양털 같은 머리털, 불꽃 같은 눈, 빛나는 주석 같은 발, 큰 물소리 같은 음성, 일곱 별을 쥔 손, 날카로운 칼 같은 입, 해같이 빛나는 얼굴. 이 모든 것은 예수님의 지혜와 공의, 권능, 심판, 영광을 상징합니다.

 

그 예수님 앞에 요한은 죽은 사람처럼 엎드려 버립니다. 그런데 예수님이 오른손을 얹고 말씀하십니다. “두려워하지 말아라. 나는 처음이며 마지막이다. 나는 죽었으나 이제 영원히 살아 있고, 사망과 지옥의 열쇠를 가지고 있다.”

즉, 예수님은 영원히 살아 계셔서 천국과 지옥을 심판하시는 주님입니다. 그런데 그 능력의 손으로 우리에게 말씀하십니다. “두려워하지 마라.” 고난과 환난 속에서 끝까지 믿음을 지키는 자들을 반드시 보호하고 천국으로 인도하시겠다는 약속입니다.

그래서 옛 성도들은 환난과 핍박 중에도 믿음을 버리지 않았고, 그 신앙을 생각할 때 기쁨이 충만하다고 고백했습니다. 왜냐면 그들이 어떤 분을 믿는지 정확히 알았기 때문입니다.

 

베트남전에 참전했던 한 병사는 라이터에 이렇게 새겼다고 합니다.
“살기 위해 싸워 보기 전까지는 진짜 살아 본 게 아니다. 삶에는 보호받는 사람은 모르는 맛이 있다.”
전쟁터 한복판을 살아본 사람만 아는 맛이 있다는 것이죠.

 

우리도 마찬가지입니다. 예수님을 믿고 고난과 환난 속에서 살아가는 사람만 아는 신앙의 맛이 있습니다. 함께 신앙을 나누는 기쁨, 넘어질 것 같은 순간에도 일으켜 세우시는 예수님을 경험하는 맛입니다. 세상 사람들은 이해하지 못합니다. “왜 그렇게 힘들게 사냐?”라고 하죠. 하지만 우리는 그 맛을 알기에, 과거에도 지금도 앞으로도 계속 예수님의 환난과 나라와 참음에 동참하는 것입니다.

그래서 우리는 두려워하지 않습니다. 주님의 격려와 위로를 붙들고 끝까지 충성할 수 있습니다. 시드니성서침례교회 모든 성도님들이 그 믿음으로 끝까지 걸어가시기를 축원합니다.

 

The Flavor We Can Taste in Tribulation and Persecution (Revelation 1:9–20)

 

The Apostle John introduces himself in verse 9 by first calling himself a “brother.” Though we differ in age, background, appearance, and position, we have become one body through the blood of Jesus Christ—brothers and sisters in Him. John also confesses that he is a companion in “the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus.” In other words, because he testified about Jesus, he faced suffering; but by enduring that suffering, he affirms that he and all believers will enter God’s kingdom together.

 

This is true for our congregation here at Austraila Korean Baptist Church as well. We are all different, yet we are one body in Christ, united by our confession that Jesus is Lord. We are members who cannot be separated. And although we may face hardship because of Christ, we will one day rest together in the same heavenly kingdom. As we walk through trials together, we experience a deeper sense of fellowship, encouraging one another and overcoming together. The believer sitting next to you is more precious than anyone else in this world—so precious that you might even feel compelled to turn and say, “Please forgive me for not recognizing your worth sooner.”

 

The Apostle John was exiled to the island of Patmos for preaching about Jesus—not without cause, but because he proclaimed the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. For a disciple of Christ, suffering is an unavoidable path. Just as someone who has something to say naturally speaks, the one who has experienced the grace of God naturally proclaims Jesus, and that inevitably leads to walking a different path from the world—a path that often includes hardship.

 

 Are you experiencing suffering or persecution because of Jesus? Or perhaps you have gone through such hardship and are now still faithfully serving the Lord? If so, you are believing rightly. And to help us endure, the Lord has given us the book of Revelation as a letter of comfort and love—a message in which Jesus says, “Do not be afraid. Endure to the end. I am the One who holds you fast.”

 

 Jesus instructs John to send this message to the seven churches of Asia—Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. These churches were suffering just as John was, and Jesus sends them a message of comfort and encouragement so that they might persevere until they enter the kingdom of God.

 

 This is also true for our church and its members. We face trials and hardships—sometimes ones we cannot understand—but God never abandons those who remain faithful to the end. He leads them to heaven. He sends them letters of hope, and in mysterious ways He comforts and strengthens them.

 

 Look at how far our church has come. We had few people, limited  resources, and many obstacles—but we are here today. Not because of our strength or ability, but because Jesus Christ, who died and rose again for us, has guided us with His unseen hand. As we served VIPs and cared for souls in need of salvation—sometimes through difficulty—the Lord encouraged and comforted our church in astounding ways.

 

 So what kind of Lord is it who comforts and strengthens us like this? Verses 12–16 describe the risen and exalted Christ in detail: Jesus standing among seven golden lampstands; wearing a robe reaching down to His feet with a golden sash around His chest as our great High Priest and King of kings; His hair white like wool; His eyes like blazing fire; His feet like glowing bronze; His voice like the sound of rushing waters; in His right hand seven stars; from His mouth a sharp double-edged sword; and His face shining like the sun in all its brilliance. All these images symbolize His wisdom, righteousness, power, judgment, and glory.

 

 Before this glorious Jesus, John falls at His feet as though dead. But Jesus places His right hand on him and says, “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.”
 

 This means Jesus lives forever and has absolute authority over heaven and hell. And with that same mighty hand He tells us, “Do not be afraid.” He promises to protect those who remain faithful in suffering and to bring them safely into His kingdom.

 

 This is why the believers of old did not abandon their faith during trials and persecution. They were filled with joy whenever they remembered their faith, because they knew exactly who their Lord was.

A soldier who fought in the Vietnam War once engraved these words on his lighter:
“You haven’t really lived until you’ve fought to stay alive. There is a taste in life the protected will never know.”
There is a certain “flavor” known only to those who have walked through the battlefield.

 

 The same is true for us. There is a spiritual “taste” that only those who follow Jesus through suffering and tribulation can know—the joy of sharing faith together, the sweetness of experiencing the Lord lifting us up when we feel we are about to fall. The world cannot understand this. They ask, “Why live in such a difficult way?” But we know the taste. And because we know it, we share in the suffering, the kingdom, and the patient endurance that are ours in Jesus—yesterday, today, and always. Therefore, we are not afraid. Holding fast to the encouragement and comfort of our Lord, we can remain faithful to the end. May every member of Sydney Bible Baptist Church walk this path with steadfast faith until the Lord calls us home.
