지금 열려있는 문을 굳게 붙잡으세요(2026.02.01)

 

 

술을 좋아하는 남편이 밤새 술을 마시다 새벽녘에 집에 들어왔을 때, 화가 난 아내가 문을 열며 소리를 질렀습니다. “이 새벽에 뭐하러 들어와. 동틀 때까지 술집이나 찾아 돌아다니지!” 그때 술에 취한 남편이 이렇게 대답합니다. “지금 이 시간에 문 연 집은 여기밖에 없어!” 그래도 문이 열려 있는 자기 집이 있었기 때문에 그는 돌아올 수 있었습니다. 문이 열려 있다는 것은 그 자체로 귀한 일입니다.

오늘 우리 사회에는 ‘열린’이라는 말이 자주 사용됩니다. 열린 음악회, 열린 예배, 열린 교회, 열린 교육 등은 모두 일방적인 구조를 넘어 서로 소통하고 함께 참여하는 것을 의미합니다. ‘열려 있다’는 것은 혼자만의 생각에 갇히지 않고 상호 간에 마음과 생각이 오가는 상태를 말합니다. 칼 포퍼는 “내 주장이 틀릴 수도 있다”는 사고의 개방성이 있을 때 열린 사회가 가능하다고 말했습니다. 교회도 마찬가지입니다. 폐쇄적인 교회, 닫힌 교회는 더 이상 세상에 영향력을 줄 수 없습니다. 우리의 마음과 생각이 열려야 하고, 영안과 귀가 열려야 합니다.

사도 요한은 빌라델비아 교회에게 주님께서 “네 앞에 열린 문을 두었다”(계 3:8)고 말씀하셨음을 전합니다. 빌라델비아 교회는 열린 문 앞에서 그 기회를 붙잡았고, 주님으로부터 칭찬을 받는 교회가 되었습니다. 오늘 우리 교회도 어떻게 하면 열린 성도, 열린 교회가 되어 하나님께서 맡기신 사도행전의 비전을 이루어 갈 수 있을지를 이 말씀을 통해 배우고자 합니다.

빌라델비아라는 이름은 ‘형제 사랑’이라는 뜻을 지니고 있으며, 역사적으로도 형제에 대한 충성과 신뢰로 알려진 도시였습니다. 경제적으로 풍요롭고 종교적으로는 우상 숭배가 성행하던 도시였지만, 그 가운데서도 빌라델비아 교회는 주님께 책망을 받지 않고 칭찬만 받은 교회였습니다.

주님께서는 그 교회를 향해 “네가 작은 능력을 가지고도”(계 3:8)라고 말씀하십니다. 이는 능력이 거의 없다는 뜻으로, 그들은 사회적으로 보잘것없는 사람들이었습니다. 그러나 주님께서는 크고 많음을 보지 않으시고, 최선을 다해 순종했는지를 보셨습니다. 주님께서는 능력이 많은 사람을 찾으시는 분이 아니라, 말씀에 순종하는 사람을 찾으십니다.

빌라델비아 성도들은 두 가지 이유로 칭찬을 받았습니다. 첫째, 그들은 말씀을 지켰습니다. 어려운 환경 속에서도 말씀에 순종했고, 주님께서는 “내 말을 지켰다”, “나의 인내의 말씀을 지켰다”(계 3:8, 10)고 칭찬하셨습니다. 세상 사람들의 눈에는 어리석어 보일지라도, 말씀에 순종하는 사람이 주님께 인정받는 사람입니다. “이 예언의 말씀을 읽고 듣고 지키는 사람은 복이 있다”(계 1:3)고 하신 말씀처럼, 말씀을 지키는 자가 복 있는 사람입니다.

둘째, 그들은 주님을 배반하지 않았습니다. 로마의 황제 숭배와 극심한 박해 속에서도, 또 교회 안에 침투한 거짓된 세력의 도전 속에서도(계 3:9), 그들은 믿음을 지켰습니다. 믿음의 가치는 양이나 숫자가 아니라 변하지 않음에 있습니다. 시간이 지나도 변하지 않는 믿음이 주님께서 기뻐하시는 믿음입니다.

이러한 성도들에게 주님께서는 분명한 약속을 주십니다. 주님은 “다윗의 열쇠를 가지고 계신 분”으로, 여시면 닫을 사람이 없고 닫으시면 열 사람이 없는 분이십니다(계 3:7). 말씀을 지키는 성도 앞에 주님께서는 닫힌 문을 여시고, 선교의 문과 축복의 문을 열어 주십니다.

또한 주님께서는 “시험의 때에 너를 지켜 주겠다”(계 3:10)고 약속하십니다. 하나님은 우리가 감당할 수 없는 시험을 허락하지 않으시며, 반드시 피할 길을 마련해 주시는 신실하신 분이십니다(고전 10:13).

더 나아가 주님께서는 이기는 사람을 하나님의 성전에 기둥이 되게 하시겠다고 하셨습니다(계 3:12). 기둥은 성전을 떠받치는 중심입니다. 주님께서는 변하지 않는 믿음으로 사는 사람을 하나님의 집에서 가장 중요한 인물로 세워 주십니다. 그 이름을 기억하시고 영원한 영광 가운데 기록하십니다.

그러므로 오늘 우리에게 주어진 열린 문을 붙잡아야 합니다. 전도의 문은 언제나 열려 있는 것이 아닙니다. 기회가 있을 때 붙잡아야 합니다. 바울이 “전도의 문을 열어 달라”고 기도했던 것처럼(골 4:2-4), 우리도 잃어버린 영혼을 품고 기도하며 나아가야 합니다.

빌라델비아 교회는 적은 능력을 가졌지만 말씀을 지키고 믿음으로 인내함으로 주님의 칭찬을 받았습니다. 오늘 우리도 열린 성도, 열린 교회로서 생명을 살리는 사명에 충성함으로, 주님 앞에 인정받는 교회가 되기를 바랍니다. 날마다 시험에서 승리하며, 주님의 성전에 기둥처럼 쓰임 받는 성도들이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
 

 

Hold On to the Open Door (Revelation 3:7–13, NIV)

 

When a husband who enjoyed drinking came home at dawn after spending the entire night drinking, his angry wife opened the door and shouted,
“What are you doing coming home at this hour? Why didn’t you just keep wandering from bar to bar until daylight?”

The drunken husband replied,
“This is the only house with an open door at this hour!”

Despite everything, he was able to return because his home door was open.
An open door, in itself, is something precious.

In today’s society, the word “open” is used frequently—open concerts, open worship services, open churches, open education. All of these go beyond one-way structures and emphasize communication and participation. To be open means not being trapped in one’s own thoughts, but allowing hearts and minds to interact with one another.

Philosopher Karl Popper said that an open society is possible only when we are willing to admit, “I may be wrong.” The same is true for the church. A closed church, a church that shuts itself off, can no longer have influence in the world. Our hearts and minds must be open; our spiritual eyes and ears must be opened.

The apostle John records that the Lord said to the church in Philadelphia,
“See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut” (Revelation 3:8, NIV).
The church in Philadelphia seized the opportunity before that open door and became a church that received only praise from the Lord.

Today, we want to learn from this passage how our church can become open believers and an open church, faithfully carrying out the Acts-like vision God has entrusted to us.

The name Philadelphia means “brotherly love.” Historically, the city was known for loyalty and trust among brothers. Though it was economically prosperous and religiously filled with idol worship, the church in Philadelphia stood out as a church that received no rebuke from the Lord—only praise.

The Lord said to them,
“You have little strength” (Revelation 3:8, NIV).
This means they had very little power or influence in the society; they were socially insignificant. Yet the Lord does not look at size or abundance—He looks at obedience. God does not seek those with great ability, but those who obey His word to the very best of what they have.

The believers in Philadelphia were praised for two reasons.

First, they kept the word of God.
Despite difficult circumstances, they obeyed the Word, and the Lord praised them, saying,
“You have kept my word” and “you have kept my command to endure patiently” (Revelation 3:8, 10, NIV).
Though obedience may look foolish in the eyes of the world, those who keep God’s Word are the ones God approves. As Scripture says,
“Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it” (Revelation 1:3, NIV).

Second, they did not deny the name of the Lord.
Amid emperor worship, severe persecution, and even false forces infiltrating the church (Revelation 3:9), they held fast to their faith. The value of faith is not measured by numbers or size, but by faithfulness. A faith that does not change over time is the kind of faith that pleases the Lord.

To such believers, the Lord gives clear promises.

He is the One who holds “the key of David.”
“What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open” (Revelation 3:7, NIV).
To those who keep His Word, the Lord opens closed doors—doors of mission, doors of ministry, and doors of blessing.

The Lord also promises,
“I will keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world” (Revelation 3:10, NIV).
God is faithful. He will not allow us to be tested beyond what we can bear, and He always provides a way out so that we can endure it (cf. 1 Corinthians 10:13, NIV).

Furthermore, the Lord promises that the one who overcomes will be made a pillar in the temple of God (Revelation 3:12, NIV).
A pillar supports the entire structure. Those who live with unchanging faith will be established by God as central figures in His church. The Lord remembers their names and records them forever in glory.

Therefore, we must hold on to the open door given to us today.
The door of evangelism is not always open. When opportunity is given, we must seize it. Just as the apostle Paul prayed for God to open a door for the message (Colossians 4:2–4, NIV), we too must pray with a heart for the lost soul and step forward in faith.

Though the church in Philadelphia had little strength, they kept God’s Word and endured with faith, and they were praised by the Lord.
May we also become open believers and an open church—faithfully committed to the mission of saving souls—so that we may be praised by the Lord.

May you overcome every trial day by day, and may you be used like pillars in the temple of God, for the glory of His name.
